Lander Tutor is a high-performance simulation training tool. It incorporates a training plan whose aim is to increase road safety and efficient driving. The system permits generating reflexes so that the driver gains experience in solving risk situations and is capable of reacting automatically and correctly. The simulator enables the instructor to set out situations for the driver for him to solve them satisfactorily, and these situations are recorded as real experiences.
One of its main features is its versatility. The system is capable of reproducing the driving of different types of vehicles. There are many configuration possibilities for each one of the vehicle models. It has a broad scope or total immersion simulation status. The scenarios are extremely realistic and recreate towns, villages, motorways and secondary roads that can be travelled along using trailers, straight trucks, road trains, coaches and buses, etc. with similar technical features and dynamic performance as those that travel along the roads each day.
The training station comprises a real driving cabin which can be chosen from among the cabin manufacturers on the market. The viewing system is comprised of three overhead projection screens without a frame, with a total surface area of 22 square metres. Thanks to the lack of frame in the joints between the screens and the geometry of the system, the image has maximum continuity.
To achieve the highest degree of immersion it has a moving platform with 6 degrees of freedom, for optimal perception of acceleration, braking, centrifugal force, etc.
With the aim of giving the instructor all of the necessary means to provide quality training to the drivers, a very complete instructor station has been developed.
It makes it possible to supervise the operations being carried out by the driver at all times, and to introduce changes in weather conditions, incidents or faults. During the entire exercise the instructor can communicate with the student using the communication system with the cabin via a microphone and speakers.
Realistic surroundings
The scenarios and routes are varied and have been defined to generate realistic training situations. The scenarios contain urban and inter-urban roads and motorways. They reproduce as realistically as possible weather and visibility conditions: rain, snow, wind, fog, luminosity, time of day, etc. Apart from all of this, the surroundings have realistic pedestrians and traffic which make the surroundings completely real for the driver.
Versatility
The system is capable of reproducing the driving of different models of vehicles. It has a wide range of configuration possibilities for each of them: the type of gear box, the engine power, the charge level and its layout, the state of the tyres, vehicles equipped with ABS, ASR etc.
Help for the instructor
The autonomy for automatic assessment of sessions, complete monitoring of the activity of students and the recording of sessions on video or audio are all elements that facilitate the instructor’s work to a great extent. All of the sessions are recorded and can be played back at any time via a user-friendly interface which is the equivalent of a DVD player.
Incidents and faults
The system simulates a wide range of incidents and faults that drivers normally have to cope with on the roads, situations that create risks both for the driver and those who surround him. From obstacles on the road to emergency traffic situations, from unforeseen pedestrian crossing to vehicles which do not respect the signals, vehicles that ignore right of way, pedestrians etc. Students learn to diagnose the problem and respond accordingly.
The National Institute of Aerospace Technology (INTA) has two Lander Tutor simulators
The ALSA Training Centre at the Centre for Transport and Logistics Studies (CETYL) is situated in El Espinar, Segovia. It has one Lander Tutor simulator.
